As with a few different rooms in our house, our family room has been on the list under “needs some lovin” and I’m excited to share a few updates today!
So far we’ve updated the old fireplace by building out the wall and adding stone, a mantle and new lighting, and of course threw in some furniture like our white coffee table. The next evolution of this room involves a very large blank wall that stared at us with mean googly eyes every time I got close to it. Every idea I’ve had was either too expensive or not big enough to make a dent in the beast, until one day when I was walking through Pottery Barn (and putting each and every thing into my imaginary shopping cart) and saw that in most of their amazing displays, they had lanterns hanging on the walls. Lightbulb : ) Mix that with a gallery wall large enough to fill our wall, and we had our living room inspiration!
First things first we headed to IKEA and picked up a stack of white Virserum frames and planned out our attack. My favorite trick to hanging a series of frames or art is to simply lay them out on the floor, and move each piece around until you find your winning combo.
After a little bit, we landed on this design. The middle is both the largest and tallest part of the wall, and it gets progressively smaller on each side. I am a symmetry nut, so although I love how random gallery walls look, my eye might start twitching if it didn’t line up just right. We’re all allowed a little crazy, right? : )
My quick tip to hanging these frames is to pick up a few sawtooth hangers from a hardware store and add them to the top- much less frustrating than dealing with the wires, and all you need is a hammer!
Next up was the lanterns! We looked around a few different stores to find matching ones, but ended up right back at Pottery Barn where we picked up four silver Malta lanterns and hooks.
My super scientific way to determine where the lanterns were going was to move around a few pieces of paper that were taped to the wall until M and I were happy with it. Tall enough to avoid any head hitting, and aligned just right so no photos would be blocked.
All that was left was to go through pictures and pick out our favorites- which was probably my favorite part! We got them printed at an office supply store very inexpensively, and our large wall conundrum was over : )
The new gallery wall adds a fun little pop and more dimension, and we’re one step closer to this room being complete! I love decorating with photos, and this house was lacking the personal touch that pictures can bring. We mixed both family and friends with trips and fun events and I can’t wait to keep it updated with all the moments that are to come!
